How to Install Mods on Forge and Fabric

⚙️ Mods vs Plugins: what's the difference?

Plugins are exclusive to servers like Paper/Purpur and only modify the server side. Mods (Forge/Fabric) modify the game deeply and in most cases the client must have them installed too. There are exceptions like optimization mods that only go on the server.

📦 1. Make sure of the correct server type

In the panel, go to Startup and confirm your server is Forge or Fabric. You can't use Forge mods on a Fabric server and vice versa.

🔍 2. Download the mods

The most reliable sites for mods are:
  • CurseForge.com — The largest Minecraft mod library.
  • Modrinth — Excellent for Fabric mods, very up to date.
Make sure to download the correct mod version for your Minecraft version and for your server type (Forge or Fabric).

🗂️ 3. Upload the mod to the /mods folder

In the panel, go to Files and navigate to the /mods folder. If it doesn't exist, create it. Upload the mod's .jar file. If the mod has dependencies (stated in its description), upload those files to the same folder too.

🔄 4. Restart and verify

Restart the server. The first time a new mod loads it may take longer than usual. Check the console to confirm there are no errors. If you see Mod loaded successfully or similar, all is well!

💻 5. The client also needs the mods

If the mod modifies the game visually or adds new blocks/mechanics, your players also need to install it in their Minecraft client using the Forge/Fabric Launcher. Share exactly the same mod version with them.

⚠️ Resolving conflicts

  • If the server won't start, disable the mods one by one (renaming them to .disabled) until you find the problem.
  • Always check that all mods are compatible with each other. CurseForge and Modrinth usually list known incompatibilities.
  • Mods that change world generation can corrupt existing worlds. Always make a backup before installing this kind of mod.
