Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge: which one should you pick?

Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge: which one should you pick?

⚡ The short answer

None of them is best at everything. Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are three different mod loaders, and every mod is released for one or more of them. What decides it is which mods you want and on which Minecraft version:
  • You're going to play a modpack: use the loader and version the modpack states. There is nothing to choose.
  • Big tech, magic or adventure mods on 1.20.1 or older: Forge.
  • The same on 1.21.1 or newer: NeoForge.
  • A handful of mods, performance mods, or a game version that has just come out: Fabric.

🔨 Forge

The oldest of the three, with the largest back catalogue on older versions. On 1.20.1 and earlier, most large modpacks are built for Forge. It is still maintained and has builds for the newest game releases, but on recent versions many of the big mods are published for NeoForge.

🦊 NeoForge

It started in July 2023 as a fork of Forge, created by almost all of the original team. On Minecraft 1.20.1 most Forge mods also work on NeoForge; from 1.20.2 onwards the two went separate ways and each mod needs its own build. Its most used version is 1.21.1, for which the project itself counts more than 16,000 mods. If a recent modpack says "NeoForge", Forge won't do, and the other way round.

🧵 Fabric

It describes itself as a modular, lightweight mod loader. It ships the bare minimum, and nearly all of its mods also need Fabric API, which goes into the mods folder like any other mod. It is the usual home of optimisation mods and of mods that change only a few things, and it has builds for the latest releases. The trade-off: many of the big Forge mods don't exist for Fabric.

🔀 Can you mix them?

Not directly: a Forge mod won't load on Fabric, or the reverse. There are bridges such as Sinytra Connector, with limits; we go through them in whether you can use Forge mods on Fabric.

If you're torn between two loaders, list the mods you don't want to give up and check, on each mod's CurseForge or Modrinth page, which loader and version it exists for. That usually settles it.

🖥️ If it's for a server

  • The server and every player need the same loader, the same version and the same mods, except client-only ones such as minimaps or shaders.
  • A large modpack needs a lot more memory than an unmodded server: see how much RAM a Minecraft server needs.
  • Switching loaders on a world you've already started makes blocks and items from the mods you drop disappear. Take a backup first.
On ZentexNode you pick Forge, NeoForge or Fabric and the version from the panel, and you can change them later without opening a ticket (how to change the server version without losing data). If what you want is a CurseForge modpack, paste its link or a shared profile code and the loader and mods it asks for get installed.
