Renting a Minecraft server: what to check and what it costs

🎯 The short answer

Renting a Minecraft server comes down to three decisions: how much RAM you need, where the server should be, and what the plan has to include. At ZentexNode you pay per GB of RAM: from €1 per GB per month in Europe and from US$1 per GB in the United States, Canada and Latin America. A server for a few friends runs fine on 2 GB; a large modpack usually needs 10-12 GB.

Here is what to check on each point before you pay.

🧠 1. RAM: what sets the price

It's the first thing to choose, because it decides both the price and how much the server can handle. As a guide:

UseRAMPer month (€ · US$)
Vanilla or Paper, 1-10 players2 GBfrom €2 · US$2
Paper with plugins, 10-25 players4 GBfrom €4 · US$4
Paper with plugins, 25-50 players6-8 GBfrom €6 · US$6
Medium modpack (100-200 mods)6-8 GBfrom €6 · US$6
Large modpack (200+ mods)10-12 GB or morefrom €10 · US$10

What counts is players online at the same time, not registered players. And extra RAM doesn't make the server faster: once there's enough, the rest sits unused. We go into detail in how much RAM a Minecraft server needs. If you're torn between two plans, start with the smaller one: you can upgrade later.

📦 2. What the plan should include

Beyond RAM, this is what's worth checking before you pay (and what every ZentexNode plan includes):
  • Enough disk. The world grows with every area explored. Here each GB of RAM comes with 10 GB of NVMe disk.
  • Backups you can restore yourself, from the panel, without opening a ticket.
  • File access, with a browser file manager and SFTP, to upload a world or edit server.properties.
  • Freedom to switch type and version: Paper, Purpur, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Vanilla, BungeeCord or Bedrock + Java with Geyser, from the panel. CurseForge modpacks install by pasting the link or a shared profile code.
  • MySQL databases, for plugins that store data (ranks, economy, land claims).
  • Anti-DDoS protection included, not as an add-on.
  • Access for your friends without sharing your password: sub-users with the permissions you choose.

🌍 3. Where the server is

What matters is that the server is close to where most of your players live. At ZentexNode you pick the location at checkout:
  • Spain, for players in Spain and the rest of Europe.
  • Miami, United States, for North America, Central America, the Caribbean, Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.
  • Brazil, in the São Paulo region, for Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru.
If your group is spread across several countries, pick the location closest to most of them.

💳 4. What it costs and how you pay

  • Per GB of RAM: from €1 a month in Europe and from US$1 in the United States, Canada and Latin America, with plans starting at 2 GB. No setup fee.
  • Month to month, no contract: cancel whenever you want.
  • Card or PayPal.
  • Automatic setup: the server is created as soon as you pay and is ready in a few minutes.
Game servers don't have a free trial. If you're still deciding whether to pay at all, here's what changes between a free and a paid Minecraft server.

📈 5. When it's not enough: upgrade

Many servers start on 2 or 4 GB and grow when more players or a modpack arrive. Before you sign up, check that you can upgrade without reinstalling or starting over. At ZentexNode you can upgrade without losing your world, plugins or settings. Signs it's time: crashes with OutOfMemoryError in the console, or memory still almost full right after each garbage collection.

🛠️ 6. If you'd rather not set it up yourself

If you don't want to deal with versions and mods, Assisted setup is an optional one-time service: a technician configures the server with the version, world and mods you ask for. For any question, support works through tickets on Discord. Plans from 2 to 32 GB are on the Minecraft hosting page.
