How to set up an Unturned server (with a GSLT)

🧭 What you'll have at the end

Your Unturned server online 24/7, visible in the game's Internet list, with the map, rules and mods you choose, and you as the admin. Everything is done from the panel, in your browser. Follow the steps in this order.

🔑 1. Get your Steam token (GSLT), it's free

For your server to appear in the Internet list and accept players from outside, Steam requires a game server login token, the GSLT. You get it yourself with your Steam account:
  • Go to steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers with your account.
  • In App ID, enter 304930, Unturned's ID.
  • In Memo, write any note, such as the server name, and create it.
  • Copy the Login Token that appears.
Steam gives tokens to any account with a phone number linked that isn't a limited account (Steam limits accounts that haven't yet spent a minimum in the store), and Unturned has to be in your library; since it's free, just add it. Use one token per server and treat it like a password.

📝 2. Paste it in the panel and start

In the panel, open your server and go to the Startup tab. Paste the token in Steam GSLT and press Start. When the console shows Loading level: 100%, the server is online.

If you start without a token, the console tells you so with the Steam link and the server stops, instead of staying on with nobody able to join. It isn't an error: that step is just missing. The email telling you the server is ready reminds you too.

⚙️ 3. Name, password, map and rules

The same Startup tab has everything about the game:
  • Server name and Server password: how it appears in the list and who can join. With no password, anyone can join.
  • Max players: from 1 to 200.
  • Map: PEI by default; also Washington, Russia, Yukon, Germany, Greece, Kuwait, Elver, Hawaii, Buak, A6 Polaris and others, or the name of a Workshop map.
  • Perspective: First (first person), Third (third person), Both or Vehicle (third person only in vehicles).
  • Difficulty: Easy, Normal or Hard.
  • PvP: on, players can hurt each other; off, the server is PvE.
They're applied on every start: after changing them, restart the server.

👑 4. Make yourself an admin

In Owner Steam ID, enter your SteamID64, the 17-digit number that starts with 7656. You'll find it in your Steam account details, or in your profile address if you haven't set a custom one. When you join, you'll be the server admin.

The panel writes its settings to Servers/Unturned/Server/Commands.dat. Any other lines you add there, such as Welcome for the welcome message, stay as you leave them. You can edit that file from Files or over SFTP.

🗺️ 5. Workshop maps and mods

In Workshop mods, type the Workshop IDs separated by commas: the number at the end of each mod's or map's Steam address. The game downloads them on start, and players get them when they join. To play on a Workshop map, put its ID in that field and its name in Map.

🧱 6. Plugins with RocketMod

RocketMod comes installed. To add a plugin, upload its .dll file to Servers/Unturned/Rocket/Plugins and restart the server. Use plugins made for the same Unturned version as the server.

🎮 7. Connect

Open Unturned, go to Play → Servers, pick the Internet list and search for your server by its name. If you set a password, the game asks for it. You can also use Connect with the address and main port shown in the panel. Unturned has no crossplay with consoles: the server is for the PC version on Steam.

🔄 Updates

Update on startup is on by default: the server updates on every start so it has the same version as the players' game. If you can't join after an update, restart it.

🚨 If something goes wrong

  • The console asks for the GSLT and stops: the Steam GSLT field is empty. Paste the token and press Start.
  • “Game Server Login Token (GSLT) is invalid”: the token was copied wrong or was deleted on Steam. Create another one on the same page and replace it in the panel.
  • A Workshop map doesn't load: check that its ID is in Workshop mods and that the name in Map is exactly the map's name.
  • You can't join after an update: restart the server so it catches up.
If you'd rather receive it ready to go, Assisted setup is an optional one-off paid service: you get the token, pass it to the technician and they leave the server ready with the map, mods and settings you ask for. If you have questions, open a ticket on our Discord. And if you don't have a server yet, here are the Unturned hosting plans.
