How to set up a tModLoader server (Terraria with mods)

🧭 What you'll have at the end

Your modded Terraria server running tModLoader, with the Workshop mods you pick and your group inside. Everything is done from the panel, in your browser. Follow the steps in this order.

🛒 1. Choose tModLoader when you order

When you order the Terraria server, choose the tModLoader version; the other two are Vanilla, the official server without mods, and TShock, with plugins. The plans are the same for all three. A small world with a couple of mods uses less than 1 GB of RAM, but big mod packs such as Calamity or Thorium need 3-4 GB: for those, take the 4 GB plan.

🌍 2. Set up the world

In the panel, open your server and go to the Startup tab:
  • World name: the world's name, without spaces (letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores). tModLoader changes spaces when it saves and, after a restart, wouldn't find the world; that's why the panel doesn't accept them.
  • World size: 1 small, 2 medium, 3 large.
  • Difficulty: 0 classic, 1 expert, 2 master, 3 journey.
  • World seed: empty, the world is random.
  • Max players, Server password and Welcome message (MOTD): slots, password and what players see when they join.
Size, difficulty and seed only count when the world is created. To try another one, type a new name and restart: a new world is created and the previous one stays saved in saves/Worlds.

🧩 3. Add Workshop mods

In Workshop mods, type the mod IDs separated by commas: the number at the end of each mod's Steam Workshop address. Add the mods they depend on too, listed on each mod's page under “Required items”.

Then go to Settings → Reinstall Server. The server downloads the mods, keeps the newest version of each and enables them in mods/enabled.json. If an ID is wrong or isn't a tModLoader mod, the console says so. Before reinstalling, make a copy from Backups (backup guide): the installation keeps your serverconfig.txt, but this way you're on the safe side.

Have a mod that isn't on the Workshop? Upload its .tmod file to the mods folder from Files or over SFTP and add its name, without .tmod, to mods/enabled.json.

▶️ 4. Start it

Press Start. The first time, the server generates the world with the mods loaded, so it takes a little longer. When the console shows Type 'help' for a list of commands, the server is ready.

🎮 5. Connect

Every player needs tModLoader, which is free on Steam, with the same mods as the server: the easiest way is to subscribe to those mods on the Workshop. You can't join with regular Terraria: the server replies that a modded client is required. In tModLoader, go to Multiplayer → Join via IP and enter the address and port shown in the panel.

🔄 6. Updating tModLoader and the mods

Neither tModLoader nor the mods update on their own: they're brought up to date when you reinstall. In tModLoader version, latest downloads the newest version; if your mods don't work with it yet, enter the previous one, for example v2026.08.3.0. When you update, tell your group: everyone needs the same version of tModLoader and of the mods.

🚨 If something goes wrong

  • “no se ha podido bajar” (couldn't download) when reinstalling: the ID isn't a tModLoader mod or was copied wrong.
  • The server stops while loading mods: usually a dependency is missing or a mod doesn't work with that tModLoader version. Remove it from the list and reinstall.
  • A player can't join: check they have the same mods and the same tModLoader version.
  • It runs out of memory with lots of mods: upgrade your plan, which you can do without losing your world.
If you'd rather receive it ready to go, Assisted setup is an optional one-off paid service in which a technician leaves the server ready with the world and mods you ask for. If you have questions, open a ticket on our Discord. And if you don't have a server yet, here are the Terraria hosting plans.
