Free Minecraft server hosting vs paid: what changes

🎯 The short answer

If you just want to play for a weekend with a couple of friends, free Minecraft server hosting or running the server on your own PC will do the job, and there is no reason to pay. In the free vs paid Minecraft server question, paying starts to make sense once the server needs to be online all the time, once mods come into play, or once a group relies on it.

💸 How free hosting pays its bills

A server uses RAM, CPU, disk and bandwidth around the clock, and somebody covers that cost. Free hosts usually do it with ads, with paid tiers that lift the limits, and with very tight resource sharing: many servers live on one machine and only the ones being played are actually running.

It is a legitimate model and it works for trying things out, but it explains nearly every limit you will run into.

⏳ Typical limits of a free server

Every service is different, so read its terms. You will usually meet several of these:
  • A queue to start: the server is not sitting there switched on and, at peak times, you wait your turn.
  • Automatic shutdown: once nobody is connected it stops after a few minutes, and someone has to start it again.
  • Limited, shared RAM and CPU: enough for vanilla with a few players, tight as soon as many chunks are loaded.
  • Ads in the panel or when the server starts.
  • Caps on plugins, mods or world size: a fixed list of what you may install, or a disk ceiling.
  • No guaranteed backups: a server left idle for a long time can end up deleted.
  • No personal support: forums and documentation.

🏠 The other free option: hosting on your PC

Download the official server.jar, start it with java -Xmx2G -jar server.jar nogui and accept the EULA by setting eula=true in eula.txt. For friends to join from outside, forward port 25565 (TCP) on your router and give them your public IP. The downsides:
  • Your IP is exposed to anyone who has the address.
  • Your PC has to stay on while someone plays, and the game and the server share the same RAM.
  • Some ISPs use CG-NAT, in which case you cannot forward ports without asking them.
  • A power or internet cut at your home kicks everyone out.
For an occasional session among people you trust, it is a valid choice.

📈 When paying starts to be worth it

  • It has to be available at any time: people log in at different hours and nobody wants to depend on someone else starting it.
  • You want a modpack: as a rough guide, a light pack runs on 4 GB and the big ones usually ask for 6 to 8 GB or more. See how to install mods on Forge and Fabric.
  • More than four or five players at once: each one loads their own chunks and the load multiplies.
  • The community is growing: permissions, land protection and an economy all mean plugins. Here is how to install plugins on Paper and Purpur.
  • You do not want to lose the world: months of building deserve copies you can restore yourself; read how to create and restore backups.
If two or more of these sound familiar, free hosting will cost you more effort than it saves.

🔍 Cheap Minecraft server hosting: what to check

  • A clear price per GB, with no small print and no setup fee.
  • No lock-in: monthly billing you can cancel whenever you like.
  • Backups you can create and restore yourself from the panel.
  • DDoS protection included, not sold as an extra.
  • Switching version and server type without waiting on a ticket: read how to change the server version without losing data.
  • Mods and plugins without restrictions, not a fixed list.
  • SFTP access: the world is yours, so you must be able to download it or upload the world you already have.
  • Support that answers: ask a question before you buy.
  • Upgrading without losing the world: start small and add RAM when you need it.

💶 What it really costs to start

At ZentexNode the price is €1 per GB of RAM per month. The smallest Minecraft hosting plan is 2 GB for €2/month, a sensible starting point for vanilla or Paper with a small group; 4 GB is €4 and 8 GB is €8. No contract and no setup fee: pay for a month and cancel if it does not suit you.

Servers are located in Spain, a good fit for players in Europe, and every plan includes DDoS protection, NVMe disks, backups, SFTP access and support on Discord. From the panel you switch version and server type (Paper, Purpur, Forge, NeoForge, Fabric, Vanilla, or Bedrock with Geyser) without opening a ticket, and the Mods/Plugins tab installs straight from there. The server is created automatically when you pay.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Is there a Minecraft server that stays free forever?
There are free services with no expiry date, but they usually shut down when nobody is playing and have to be started by hand, sometimes after a queue. They work for playing now and then, not as an always-open server.

How much RAM do I need to start?
For vanilla or Paper with a few friends, 2 GB. With plugins and more people, 4 GB. For a modpack, check what the pack itself recommends: it is usually 6 GB and up.

Can I move my world from a free server or my PC to a paid one?
Yes, as long as you can download the world folder. Upload it over SFTP or from the panel and carry on where you left off.

🚀 Start with what you need today

If this is a weekend experiment, go free and do not feel bad about it. If the server is already where your group meets, €2/month keeps it online all the time, with backups and without exposing your IP: pick a plan in the ZentexNode store and it is live as soon as you pay.
