Minecraft online-mode: what a cracked server really means

⚡ The short answer

Whether a Minecraft Java server is “premium only” or “cracked” comes down to a single line in the server.properties file: online-mode. On true, the default, the server checks every player against official Minecraft accounts. On false it stops checking: anyone gets in, under any name they like. It takes a second to change, but it has consequences worth knowing first.

🔐 What online-mode actually does

When someone connects, the server asks Minecraft's authentication servers whether that account belongs to the person using it. That check is the only thing making sure “Steve” is the Steve you know, and not someone else who typed that name.

The line lives in server.properties, in the server's main folder, and a change only applies after a restart. The Minecraft Wiki puts it this way: it should only be false on a server that isn't connected to the internet.

⚠️ What changes when you set it to false

  • Anyone can pose as anyone. A player who joins under an admin's name gets that admin's operator permissions. The whitelist doesn't protect you either: using a name that's on it is enough.
  • You need a login plugin (AuthMe is the most widely known) so every player registers with a password. Without one, the server is wide open.
  • Player IDs change. Minecraft stores inventories, permissions and land claims by UUID. In offline mode the UUID is derived from the username and doesn't match the official account's. Switch an existing server and players show up as brand new, without their stuff.
  • Skins stop loading, unless you add a plugin that restores them.
  • Geyser doesn't support offline mode, according to its own documentation.

⚖️ The legal side

The server software is free and the online-mode option is part of it. What doesn't change is the game's licence: the Minecraft EULA grants a personal licence and doesn't allow handing out copies or giving other people access to the game. An offline-mode server doesn't give anyone a licence: each player still needs their own copy. That's why this article doesn't explain how to play without buying the game, only what this setting does on a server.

📱 If the real reason is friends on mobile

A lot of people look for a cracked server because part of the group plays on a phone and has no Java account. You don't need to touch online-mode for that. A Java server with Geyser and Floodgate lets Bedrock players (phone, console or Windows) join with their own Bedrock account, without buying Java Edition, and the server stays on online-mode=true.

On ZentexNode that's the “Bedrock + Java (Geyser)” server type, which you pick from the panel. We walk through it in how to play on the same server from a phone and a PC.

🛡️ If you do change it, do it in order

  • Back up first. If something goes wrong you can roll back: see how to create and restore backups.
  • Better on a fresh server than on one with months of play, because of the UUID change.
  • Install the login plugin before you open the server, not after. If you've never done it, see how to install plugins on Paper and Purpur.
  • Give operator to very few people, and only once login is working.
  • Stop the server, edit, start it again. With a hosting provider, you edit server.properties from the panel's file manager.
In short: online-mode=false is not a free trick. It removes the only identity check the game ships with and leaves you to replace it yourself. If what you need is for friends on mobile to join, the answer is Geyser, not offline mode.
